Description
Utrecht is the capital and most populous city in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands. Utrecht's ancient city centre features many buildings and structures several dating as far back as the High Middle Ages.
The most prominent building is the Gothic-style Dom tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, at 112.5 metres (368 feet) in height. It is the symbol of the city.
The Old Canal (Dutch: Oudegracht) runs through the city center and was built in the Middle Ages. It connects the river Vecht in the north and the river Kromme Rijn in the south. A unique aspect of the Oudegracht is that the wharfs are below street level.
